Transcend Cruises unveils yacht-inspired river cruise ship design

Transcend Cruises has unveiled the design of its first purpose-built river cruise ship, a yacht-inspired vessel created in partnership with Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) that aims to redefine the premium river cruise experience.

The 135-metre ship has been designed specifically for luxury group travel, private charters, and meetings, departing from the traditional river cruise model by placing greater emphasis on flexibility and adaptable event spaces.

Designed by TDoS, part of the Viken Group, the vessel will accommodate up to 120 guests and 54 crew, giving it one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the river cruise sector.

According to the designers, the project represents the first purpose-built yacht-inspired river cruise platform of its kind, with the layout developed to support a wide range of charter, incentive, and corporate events while maintaining a luxury hospitality experience.

“We weren’t simply designing beautiful interiors – we were helping define an entirely new product category,” said Anna Silvesjö, Chief Executive Officer of Viken Group.

The ship features 60 staterooms arranged across two accommodation decks.

In a departure from conventional river cruise layouts, adjoining cabins can be combined to create up to 30 two-room suites, allowing operators to tailor accommodation to different charter groups and guest requirements.

The flexible configuration is intended to support the vessel’s primary focus on private groups rather than the traditional fixed-itinerary river cruise market.

Interior spaces

Public spaces have also been designed to maximise versatility while retaining a contemporary yacht aesthetic.

The top deck includes a lounge, grill, outdoor cinema, walking track, and yoga area, creating multiple venues for both organised events and leisure activities.

Transcend Cruises has positioned the vessel as a dedicated platform for the business events and charter market rather than a conventional river cruise ship, reflecting broader changes in how operators are approaching Europe’s inland waterways.

The project also highlights the increasing influence of superyacht design principles within the cruise industry, with more brands adopting residential-style interiors, flexible social spaces, and higher staff-to-guest ratios to differentiate their products.
