Rotterdam in drydock
Holland America Line’s Rotterdam has returned to service following a two-week refit and refurbishment in the Netherlands, unveiling upgrades to suites, entertainment spaces, and public areas.
Holland America Line’s flagship vessel resumed operations on April 26th, welcoming guests back on board for its Northern Europe summer season after completing a scheduled dry dock programme.
The work focused on expanding live music venues, enhancing suite accommodation for groups, and refreshing interiors across the ship.
The vessel has returned to its regular programme of seven-day itineraries across Northern Europe, with the first guests to board experiencing the updated spaces and facilities.
The enhancements place particular emphasis on entertainment and social areas, alongside practical changes aimed at accommodating families and groups travelling together.
Live music venues were expanded across multiple areas of the ship.
Both Billboard Onboard and Rolling Stone Lounge now feature increased seating capacity, supported by a redesigned central lounge that allows guests to experience performances from both venues within a shared space. Elsewhere, the Crow’s Nest has been fitted with a new live music stage, adding another venue for performances, lectures, and enrichment activities with panoramic views.
Outdoor entertainment has also been extended, with the addition of a new stage and bandstand at the Sea View Pool on Deck 9 aft. The changes introduce further options for daytime and evening performances in open-air settings, reflecting a broader shift towards distributing entertainment across the vessel.
Accommodation upgrades were concentrated in the Vista Suite category, where 22 suites have been fitted with new sofa beds to support quad occupancy. The change increases capacity for groups while maintaining the existing layout and amenities associated with the Pinnacle Class design.
Across the ship, interior updates were carried out to improve both appearance and functionality.
New carpeting has been installed in staterooms, corridors, and public areas, while furniture upholstery has been replaced and wood finishes refinished and polished. In the main dining room, selected tables were updated to allow for more flexible seating arrangements.
The Greenhouse Spa & Salon received targeted improvements, including the installation of a redesigned hair-washing station intended to improve ergonomics for both guests and staff. The casino was also refreshed, with the addition of approximately 20 slot machines, updated seating, new carpeting, and televisions in the table games area.
Retail updates focused on the Effy Jewellery boutique, which has been redesigned with new flooring, lighting, wall finishes, and display fixtures. The refurbishment aligns the space with similar upgrades introduced on other vessels in the fleet, including Koningsdam, Westerdam, and Zuiderdam.
The dry dock forms part of a broader programme of incremental upgrades across the fleet, with Rotterdam returning to service in time for the peak Northern Europe cruise season.
