Another Broadway show ends run as Norwegian Cruise Line revamps entertainment

Norwegian Cruise Line has confirmed that Jersey Boys will conclude its run aboard Norwegian Bliss, marking the latest Broadway production to be withdrawn as the company continues to overhaul its onboard entertainment model.

Guests booked to sail on Norwegian Bliss were advised in late January that the long-running musical will no longer be staged in the ship’s theatre.

The Broadway production has headlined the entertainment line-up aboard Norwegian Bliss since the vessel was first introduced in 2018.

“As we prepare for your upcoming voyage, we want to share a quick update about our entertainment lineup. ‘Jersey Boys’ will be concluding its run in the Bliss Theater,” said Norwegian Cruise Line.

“While we know this change may come as a disappointment, we are refreshing our offerings with a rotating collection of performers chosen to surprise, delight and keep your evenings just as memorable.”

The replacement programme will feature a rotating schedule of performers, including comedians, magicians, jugglers and other speciality acts.

Guests are being asked to reserve places for the new shows once onboard, either through the NCL app, interactive television screens or by visiting the box office.

“We’re here for you every step of the way, and we’re committed to making this cruise not just enjoyable but unforgettable,” said Norwegian Cruise Line.

The decision aligns with a broader shift away from licensed Broadway productions across the fleet, a strategy first outlined in mid-2023.

At the time, Norwegian Cruise Line said it was restructuring its entertainment and theatre offerings to “elevate the offerings” and “exceed the expectations” of guests. The initiative has since expanded, resulting in the removal of several large-scale productions from multiple ships between 2023 and early 2024.

Shows that have ended as part of the programme include Six on Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Breakaway, Footloose on Norwegian Joy, Swing on Norwegian Gem and Velvet on Norwegian Jewel, among others. The changes were communicated internally to crew as part of a wider effort to reallocate resources toward new productions being developed in-house.

“As part of a broader company-wide initiative, we are making some strategic adjustments to ensure that we operate our business effectively, cohesively, and profitability, while delivering a full program of exceptional products,” said Norwegian Cruise Line in a statement circulated to crew. “We remain committed to delivering innovative and cutting-edge shows that captivate and inspire our guests.”

Company executives have since linked the shift to measurable operational and financial benefits. Speaking at an investor day event, Patrik Dahlgren, executive vice president of vessel operations, said the highest-rated shows across the fleet were those with smaller casts. “Those are shows we produced internally in Tampa. They are high energy, shorter shows with less cast members,” said Dahlgren.

He added that the move away from Broadway titles has reduced licensing costs and addressed longstanding accommodation constraints. “When you have a large number of cast numbers, the challenge is the crew berths. There were simply not enough crew berths and the cast spilled over into revenue generating cabins,” he said. “By going to this model, we not only increased guest satisfaction for scores related to entertainment, but we were able to return back the revenue these cabins that were occupied by crew.”

According to company data, cast sizes have been reduced from around 42 performers per ship to approximately 21, while revenue cabins previously used for cast accommodation have been returned to inventory.
