Queen Mary 2 reunites with original Queen Mary off Long Beach after 20 years

Cunard marked a rare maritime moment off the coast of Long Beach as Queen Mary 2 anchored to reunite with her namesake, the historic Queen Mary, for the first time in two decades.

The rendezvous brought together the world’s only purpose-built ocean liner in active service and one of the most recognisable passenger ships ever built.

Queen Mary 2, renowned for her transatlantic crossings between New York and Southampton, is widely regarded as the modern standard-bearer of ocean liner design, while the original Queen Mary remains an enduring symbol of the golden age of transatlantic travel.

Queen Mary 2 entered service more than 35 years after her predecessor was retired in 1967.

Launched in 1936, the original Queen Mary is currently marking her 90th anniversary and continues to occupy a prominent place in maritime history.

Permanently moored in Long Beach, she now operates as a cultural destination featuring accommodation, dining venues, exhibitions, and public events, preserving her Art Deco heritage while serving a contemporary role ashore.

The connection between the two ships extends beyond name and legacy.

Queen Mary 2’s starboard funnel houses a fully refurbished whistle originally fitted to the first Queen Mary, providing a tangible link between the two vessels and reinforcing the continuity of Cunard’s ocean liner tradition across generations.

“This iconic rendezvous pays a powerful tribute to Cunard’s enduring legacy and the spirit of ocean travel,” said Katie McAlister, President, Cunard. “Queen Mary 2’s reunion with the original Queen Mary for the first time in 20 years reflects our past, present, and future, reminding us of Cunard’s distinct connection to maritime history and the generations brought together through timeless elegance, innovation, and one-of-a-kind journeys around the world.”

“Welcoming Queen Mary 2 to Long Beach during our 90th anniversary year is an extraordinary honour, and watching the rendezvous this morning was a once-in-a-generation sight,” said Steve Caloca, Managing Director of the Queen Mary. “This historic moment reflects the enduring bond between the Queen Mary’s past and present and continued role as a living symbol of ocean travel, innovation, and preservation.”

The Long Beach reunion followed another milestone in Queen Mary 2’s career: her first-ever transit of the Panama Canal. The passage formed part of the liner’s current world voyage and underscored the ship’s continuing operational relevance more than two decades after entering service.

After the rendezvous, Queen Mary 2 made her official return to the Port of Los Angeles for the first time in 17 years, where she is docked overnight as part of her 2026 World Voyage. The call marks a significant moment in Cunard’s West Coast presence and reflects the liner’s role in linking historic ports with long-established passenger routes.

Queen Mary 2 is currently undertaking a 108-night world voyage, her first in two years, carrying guests to more than 30 ports across six continents.

The itinerary combines extended ocean passages with overnight stays in major cities, reflecting Cunard’s continued focus on long-form global travel rather than point-to-point cruising.
