Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 celebrates America’s 250th anniversary in New York

Queen Mary 2 took centre stage in New York Harbour as part of the United States’ 250th Independence Day celebrations, joining the largest gathering of tall ships and naval vessels ever assembled in the city.

Cunard‘s flagship, Queen Mary 2, played a central role in the United States’ 250th Independence Day celebrations on July 4th, taking pride of place in New York Harbour during the Sail4th 250 commemorations.

The world’s only ocean liner was anchored in a prime viewing position for the day’s events, giving guests uninterrupted views of the largest gathering of tall ships and naval vessels ever assembled in New York City.

The celebrations also attracted national television coverage, with NBC’s TODAY programme broadcasting live from Queen Mary 2 throughout the day.

More than 100 vessels participated in the International Parade of Sail, including 46 tall ships representing 20 nations.

The procession sailed from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge past the Statue of Liberty before continuing along the Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge.

The programme also featured an International Naval Review, during which a United States Navy vessel acknowledged a fleet of 42 American and allied naval ships assembled in the harbour.

Further events included a military flypast led by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels involving more than 120 aircraft, including the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows, before concluding with a fireworks display over Manhattan.

The occasion also marked a significant milestone in Cunard’s own history.

July 4 is the anniversary of the company’s first transatlantic crossing, when RMS Britannia departed Liverpool for Boston on July 4th, 1840, inaugurating what became the world’s first regularly scheduled transatlantic steamship service.

The voyage established a connection between Britain and North America that Cunard says has continued uninterrupted for more than 185 years.

Between 1840 and 1923, the company estimates that one in five immigrants arriving in North America travelled aboard one of its ships.

New York has remained central to Cunard’s history ever since.

The line’s first arrival in the city came in December 1847, when the paddle steamer Hibernia entered New York Harbour. Since then, Cunard has maintained regular calls at the Port of New York, making it the company’s longest-serving destination.

The harbour has also hosted several milestone events for the cruise line, including the gathering of Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth 2, and Queen Victoria in 2008, which was repeated in 2011.

Queen Mary 2 remains the only purpose-built ocean liner in service and continues to operate Cunard’s scheduled transatlantic crossings between Southampton and New York.
