Disney Adventure sets Panama Canal record as largest cruise ship to transit waterway

Disney Cruise Line has set a new record after Disney Adventure made the inaugural transit of the Panama Canal this week, marking the largest passenger vessel by both capacity and gross tonnage ever to pass through the waterway.

The transit formed part of the ship’s ongoing repositioning voyage ahead of her entry into service in Asia later this year.

Measuring 342 metres in length with a beam of 46.4 metres, Disney Adventure has a gross tonnage of 208,000 and capacity for approximately 6,700 passengers, surpassing the previous canal record held by Norwegian Bliss, which transited the canal in May 2018.

The Panama Canal Authority confirmed that the vessel is now the largest passenger ship ever to complete the transit, highlighting the continued growth in cruise ship scale capable of navigating the Neopanamax locks.

The authority also confirmed that four additional cruise ships — AIDAdiva, Brilliant Lady, Celebrity Ascent and Star Seeker — are scheduled to complete their own inaugural Panama Canal transits during the 2025/26 cruise season.

In total, more than 40 Neopanamax cruise ship transits are expected during 2026.

Disney Adventure’s passage through the canal represents a key milestone in a complex repositioning programme that began following her delivery in December.

After departing Bremerhaven, Germany, the ship completed a transatlantic crossing to the Bahamas, where she underwent further inspections and preparation, before continuing to Port Canaveral and onward toward the Pacific.

The vessel’s history predates her Disney branding. Originally ordered by Dream Cruises as Global Dream, construction was underway at MV Werften in Wismar when Genting Hong Kong collapsed in early 2022.

Disney Cruise Line subsequently acquired the unfinished hull, with Meyer Werft assuming responsibility for completing and redesigning the ship to Disney’s specifications.

At 208,000 gross tons, Disney Adventure is the largest ship ever built for Disney Cruise Line and the largest in its fleet. Her design reflects a wider industry trend toward large, resort-style cruise ships structured around multiple themed districts, an approach pioneered by Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class and later adopted by MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line.

The ship’s internal layout is organised around seven themed zones, drawing on Disney, Pixar and Marvel intellectual property. Among the vessel’s most notable features is Marvel Landing, an upper-deck adventure area that includes Ironcycle Test Run, an 820-foot-long roller coaster that Disney has described as the longest at sea.

Following her Panama Canal transit, Disney Adventure continues westward toward Asia.

The ship will homeport in Singapore, operating three- and four-night itineraries, marking Disney Cruise Line’s first permanent deployment in the Asian market.

The entry into service also represents a significant expansion of the brand’s geographic footprint, as Disney Cruise Line continues a broader fleet growth programme that includes four additional ships scheduled for delivery by 2031.
