Cruise Saudi to embed heritage into cruise itineraries for greater cultural immersion

Cruise Saudi and Saudi Arabia’s Heritage Commission have signed an agreement to integrate national heritage more directly into the cruise experience, creating deeper cultural immersion for passengers and positioning the Kingdom as a key cruise destination.

Through the agreement, Cruise Saudi, the Public Investment Fund-owned developer of the Kingdom’s cruise sector, will incorporate cultural elements into itineraries, ship environments, and cruise terminals, with the aim of presenting a clearer expression of Saudi identity to international travellers arriving by sea.

The collaboration will shape both land-based and onboard experiences. According to the announcement, the agreement covers the inclusion of recognised cultural sites in cruise itineraries, as well as the activation of intangible cultural heritage onboard Aroya Cruises, the first Saudi cruise line.

This may include traditional art forms, crafts, cuisine, regional customs, and other elements that convey Saudi Arabia’s distinct cultural character. Exhibitions to showcase national culture are also expected to take place on board.

A key part of the agreement focuses on design. Heritage-inspired architectural details are set to influence port terminals and facilities used by passengers, while ships may feature interior motifs referencing Saudi design traditions.

The agreement also proposes naming itineraries after elements of national heritage, highlighting the geographic and cultural stories behind each route. Heritage sites may additionally serve as venues for special welcome events when ships call at Saudi ports.

Saudi Arabia has identified tourism as a central pillar of its Vision 2030 economic diversification strategy, with a target of 150 million annual visits by the end of the decade. Heritage tourism plays a significant role in this effort, supported by locations such as AlUla, Jeddah Historic District, Diriyah, and a growing network of protected archaeological and maritime heritage sites.

Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coastline also contains underwater archaeological remains, and the agreement includes potential cooperation on exploratory programmes and regulated diving visits for cruise passengers.

For Cruise Saudi, the agreement aligns with its ambition to create a distinctly Arabian product. Since its launch in 2021, the company has worked to establish a complete cruise ecosystem encompassing port development, destination planning and the creation of Aroya Cruises.

The new partnership aims to strengthen this identity by embedding national culture into the full journey, from terminal arrival to shore excursion.

As Saudi Arabia expands its Red Sea cruise infrastructure and prepares for further deployment of Aroya Cruises, the agreement signals a deeper focus on cultural storytelling as a core feature of future itineraries.
