Viking takes delivery in Egypt of new Nile River cruise vessel Viking Amun

Viking has taken delivery of its newest river cruise ship in Egypt, Viking Amun at Massara shipyard in Cairo, Egypt.

The delivery of Viking Amun brings Viking’s Nile River fleet to eight vessels, with plans for further expansion in the coming years.

The delivery ceremony was attended by representatives of Viking and the Massara shipyard, with Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking, describing the development as giving passengers even more opportunities to explore Egypt iconic river.

“As we continue to expand our award-winning fleet around the world, we are delighted to welcome the Viking Amun,” said Hagen. “These identical sister ships are the most elegant vessels on the Nile, and we are now pleased to offer even more opportunities for curious travelers to explore Egypt in Viking comfort.”

Hosting 82 guests in 41 staterooms, Viking Amun is built specifically for the Nile, designed to navigate the waterway on Viking’s popular 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary. 

Inspired by Viking’s award-winning river and ocean ships, Viking Amun features the elegant Scandinavian design for which Viking is known. 

She is an identical sister ship to Viking Osiris, Viking Aton, Viking Sobek and Viking Hathor, and features several aspects familiar to Viking guests, such as a distinctive square bow and an indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace. 

Together, these are the most modern sister ships sailing the Nile River. Other ships in Viking’s Egypt fleet include Viking Ra and MS Antares. 

In addition to Viking Amun, Viking plans to welcome five other new ships in Egypt in the next two years, which will bring the cruise line’s fleet to 12 vessels on the Nile River by 2027.

Viking remains focused on well-defined, long-term growth plans as part of a strategy toward maintaining a leadership position in experiential travel. The cruise line recently announced that it was planning to launch river cruise operations in India.

Based on Viking’s committed orderbook, the company expects to take delivery of 27 additional river ships by 2028 and 10 additional ocean ships by 2031. With these orders, Viking will have 112 river ships in 2028 and 23 ocean and expedition ships in 2031.
