Virgin Voyages unnamed ‘Lady Ship 2’ begins to take shape at Fincantieri

Virgin Voyages has commenced construction of its second ‘Lady Ship’ at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, according to a tweet by Stacy Shaw, Vice President of Sales & Business Development at the cruise line.

Virgin Voyages second ship will be an identical sister to Scarlet Lady, the first cruise ship being built by Virgin Voyages and due for delivery in 2020. The cruise line hasn’t confirmed at this stage whether she too will be an adults-only ship, as it will probably depend on how the market responds to the Scarlet Lady concept.

Scarlet Lady, Virgin Voyages’ first ship, was recently floated out in Genoa

The 110,000-gross ton cruise ship will have a capacity for 2,770 passengers at double occupancy in 1,303 staterooms, many of which won’t feature a dedicated bed – but that’s just the start when it comes to the myriad of ways in which Virgin Voyages are eschewing cruise ship norms.

All 20 of her on-board eateries will be complimentary, she’ll have a tattoo parlour on-board, as well as the first dedicated Karaoke room at sea, and a vinyl record shop that is a charming throwback to Virgin Group’s start as an independent record store in the UK.

Cruise & Ferry provide a nice outline of the various cuisine options that will be available to passengers:

Scarlet Lady’s restaurants include Wake, inspired by The Wolseley, London and The Grill, New York and offering a dramatic view of the ship’s wake.

Razzle Dazzle’s interior scheme nods to the bold camouflaging of ships from World War I, while the menu combines ‘nice’ vegetarian and vegan dishes with ‘naughty’ meat add-ons.

The Test Kitchen will offer innovative and avant-garde cuisine in a clean and modern space designed by Concrete Amsterdam and inspired by Escoffier’s Ma Cuisine.

Gunbae, a Korean BBQ restaurant designed by Softroom, is the first of its kind at sea, providing a social, hands on, interactive dining experience.

Pink Agave, an elevated Mexican restaurant designed by Tom Dixon, transports sailors to the vibrant streets of Mexico City through immersive void lighting.

Extra Virgin, the ship’s trattoria, will serve regionally-inspired food, deeply rooted in Italian culinary traditions.

The Dock, in the ship’s sun-dappled lounging area, is a beach club-inspired space designed by Roman and Williams.

Meanwhile the Pizza Place provides a casual chill-out spot where sailors can enjoy freshly-made pizzas in beach club-inspired surroundings.

All her suites will be RockStar category staterooms, with a range of amenities from hammocks and open showers on the balconies, to hot tubs and vintage guitars in the rooms.

There are four of these Lady Ships on order at present. While Scarlet Lady is due for delivery in 2020, ‘Scarlet Lady 2’ (not her official name as yet) will be delivered in 2021. A steel cutting and coin laying ceremony was held for the second ship in February this year.
