Academy Award-winning actor Robert Downey Jr, who plays Tony Stark, Iron Man, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has been named godfather of Disney Cruise Line’s new ship Disney Adventure.
The announcement links one of Disney’s most recognisable Marvel figures with the latest and largest vessel in the fleet.
In a video released alongside the announcement, Downey described the role as both an honour and a privilege, adding that the company’s largest ship required “a massive, gargantuan blessing to match”.
Downey portrayed Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and was named a Disney Legend in 2019. The appointment aligns with the ship’s onboard offering, which places Marvel characters prominently among its themed spaces and entertainment.
“Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honoured that Robert Downey Jr, who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for Disney Adventure,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman, Disney Experiences and incoming Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company.
Disney Adventure is being developed around seven themed areas, several of which incorporate Marvel experiences.
At Marvel Landing on the upper decks, the ship will feature the Ironcycle Test Run attraction, described as the first roller coaster on a Disney Cruise Line ship and the longest of its type at sea.
Elsewhere, the open-air Disney Imagination Garden venue will host the live stage production “Avengers Assemble!”, combining stunt sequences and special effects in a performance featuring Marvel heroes and villains.
For younger passengers, the Marvel WEB Workshop inside Disney’s Oceaneer Club will include training simulations and interactive activities themed around Avengers technology.
The selection of a Marvel actor as godfather reflects the growing integration of film franchises into cruise entertainment, particularly as operators compete for family travel markets through branded attractions and exclusive experiences.
The ship is currently undertaking a repositioning voyage after departing Germany and is expected to reach Singapore following a journey of approximately two months. It arrived at the Port of Los Angeles in early February during the transit.
Disney Cruise Line traditionally appoints figures associated with the company’s creative output as ship godparents, a role that formally blesses the vessel during its christening ceremony. The naming continues a practice in which entertainment brands are used to reinforce identity and differentiate ships in an increasingly competitive newbuild market.
