MSC Cruises reveals year-round Southern Caribbean cruises from Dominican Republic

MSC Cruises has announced plans to launch a new year-round cruise programme from La Romana in the Dominican Republic.

The itineraries mark the first time the cruise line has operated a permanent, year-round homeport in the Southern Caribbean.

The programme is scheduled to begin in November 2026 and will see MSC Cruises commit to long-term operations from a newly developed homeport in La Romana, located on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic.

MSC Cruises said the year-round operation represents a strategic expansion of its Caribbean presence and extends beyond the traditional winter-only deployment pattern used by many cruise lines in the region.

MSC Opera will operate the programme, offering weekly departures throughout the year.

Guests will be able to book seven-night sailings or combine voyages into back-to-back 14-night ‘butterfly’ itineraries. Bookings are already open, with the first sailing scheduled to depart on November 16th, 2026.

According to MSC Cruises, the itineraries will include a call at Catalina Island, located off the coast of the Dominican Republic. The island is designated as a protected nature reserve and will be accessible exclusively by cruise call. Shore activities will include beach access and snorkelling in surrounding reef areas.

The wider itinerary will also feature ports across the Eastern and Southern Caribbean, including Fort-de-France, Virgin Gorda, and Saint John’s. MSC Cruises said the selection of ports is intended to balance established cruise destinations with smaller island calls.

“MSC Cruises first started calling in the Dominican Republic in 2014, so after more than ten years it is a proud a moment for me to speak about our new homeporting offering in La Romana,” said Gianni Onorato, Chief Executive Officer of MSC Cruises.

“With year-round operations we extend the traditional season, bringing positive economic impact to the local community and bringing 120,000 additional international visitors to La Romana each year,” he added. “MSC Cruises is committed to the Dominican Republic and this new program for the long term.”

MSC Cruises estimates that the programme will generate approximately 120,000 cruise visitors annually through La Romana, translating into around 240,000 inbound and outbound air passengers, supporting demand for flights, accommodation, and services in the surrounding region.

MSC Opera is one of four ships in the Lirica class, which entered service in the mid-2000s and is positioned to operate itineraries requiring access to smaller ports. The ship will be dedicated to the La Romana programme once the deployment begins in late 2026.

The announcement forms part of MSC Cruises’ broader strategy to diversify its Caribbean homeport options beyond North America, while strengthening its presence in established cruise markets across the region.
