Viking has announced a new cultural tie-in linking its popular Nile River cruises with the release of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, set to reach cinemas in the US and UK on September 12th, 2025.
The connection is rooted in Viking’s longstanding partnership with Highclere Castle—the Hampshire estate that serves as the setting of the series—and the family that has lived there for generations.
For travellers on Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids programme, the link goes further than film tourism. The cruise line offers a five-day pre- or post-cruise extension, the British Collections of Ancient Egypt, which retraces the work of Howard Carter and his patron, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon.

The Earl’s private collection of Egyptian antiquities remains housed at Highclere Castle, where Viking guests enjoy access to areas normally closed to the public. This extension bridges the Nile itineraries with the estate at the centre of the Downton Abbey story, highlighting a historic connection between Britain’s landed gentry and the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.
Since 2014, Viking has offered travellers opportunities to experience Highclere Castle through curated land extensions. Options include Oxford & Highclere Castle and Great Homes, Gardens & Gin, both tied to selected river and ocean voyages.
These tours have become among Viking’s most recognisable offerings, with privileged access co-developed alongside the Carnarvon family.
Lady Carnarvon, who continues to host Viking guests at the estate, described the partnership as “rooted in a shared devotion to heritage, culture and the enrichment that comes from genuine exploration.” She has also featured regularly on Viking.TV in a series titled At Home at Highclere, which explores the estate’s history and grounds.

The family’s involvement extends to Viking’s fleet. Lady Carnarvon is godmother to both a Viking Longship and the ocean vessel Viking Mars.
In 2022, Lord Carnarvon became the cruise line’s first ship godfather, taking on the role for Viking Osiris, deployed on the Nile in Egypt. Their son, Edward Herbert, was later named godfather of Viking Hathor, another of Viking’s Egyptian river vessels.
The upcoming film marks the conclusion of the series that began in 2010 and became a global success, particularly after airing on PBS under the Masterpiece banner. Viking has sponsored the programme since 2011, gaining visibility as Downton Abbey introduced international audiences to Highclere Castle.
Set in the 1930s, The Grand Finale follows the Crawley family and their staff as they adapt to shifting social realities. Ahead of the release, NBC will air a primetime special, Downton Abbey Celebrates The Grand Finale, on September 10th.
