The launch of AROYA Cruises, the first cruise line tailored specifically for the Arabian and wider Middle East cruise market, marks a significant step for Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to compete globally as a major cruise destination.
The cruise line launched in December last year with its first ship, Aroya, the former World Dream. The ship was purchased at auction in 2023 and sent to Germany for a major bow-to-stern refit and refurbishment.
SmartSea, a maritime technology firm that has played a critical role in delivering the ship’s digital infrastructure, played a significant role in this transformation.

AROYA Cruises is a flagship project of Cruise Saudi, a Public Investment Fund (PIF) company, the cruise line is not only a regional first but also a technical milestone for the wider cruise industry.
SmartSea’s involvement began in 2023 with a comprehensive audit of the vessel’s IT and cybersecurity systems, which informed a complete overhaul of both onboard and operational technologies. These upgrades were essential to safely house crew and contractors during the ship’s extensive refurbishment.
A key challenge in the modernisation effort was the integration of a complex array of third-party systems — from satellite connectivity and cybersecurity platforms to hotel and property management software. The seamless alignment of these technologies now supports all guest-facing services, including reservations, entertainment, onboard retail, and food and beverage operations.

SmartSea’s scope extended well beyond connectivity. Over 2,000 Wi-Fi access points were installed across the ship to ensure reliable coverage in the Red Sea, Mediterranean, and beyond.
A fully integrated passenger system was also implemented to streamline the guest experience, while robust cybersecurity frameworks were introduced to protect personal data, operational continuity, and communications infrastructure.
From navigation and communication systems (NAVCOM) to crew management tools and guest applications, the ship’s digital ecosystem was designed with full interoperability in mind — a critical factor in delivering both operational efficiency and luxury guest experiences.
“AROYA is a pioneering, first-of-its-kind product,” said Bilal Hussain, IT & Digitalisation Executive Director at Cruise Saudi. “Partnering with SmartSea has enabled us to create a seamless experience behind the scenes, allowing our guests to enjoy efficient Wi-Fi, easy onboard bookings and more.”
SmartSea also played a central role in vendor selection and procurement, working alongside Columbia blue — which manages the ship’s operations — to oversee planning, legal reviews, risk assessments, and technology deployment. The company continues to provide post-launch support, including 24/7 helpdesk services and management of the ship’s IT infrastructure.

A new chapter for the Gulf’s cruise sector
The launch of AROYA reflects a wider strategy to position Saudi Arabia — and the Gulf more broadly — as a credible player in the mainstream cruise sector. Backed by PIF, Cruise Saudi’s investments point to long-term ambitions not only to build a regional cruise ecosystem but to do so with a high standard of technological integration and guest experience design.
By combining cultural heritage with modern infrastructure, AROYA aims to capture a unique market segment: travellers seeking a cruise experience rooted in Arabian hospitality, delivered at international standards. As the vessel enters service, it is already being viewed as a benchmark for future cruise lines emerging from the region.
Julian Panter, CEO of SmartSea, summed up the ambition: “The combination of cultural heritage, cutting-edge technology, and luxurious experiences will make AROYA a beacon of innovation in the cruise industry.”
As Saudi Arabia accelerates its tourism diversification goals under Vision 2030, AROYA serves as a high-profile demonstration of how maritime technology and strategic investment are reshaping the Gulf’s cruise landscape.
