Aroya, the first ship in the AROYA Cruises fleet, is unlike any other mainstream cruise ship afloat, offering a distinctively Arabian cruise experience in the Red Sea.

Rendering of first Aroya cruise ship

The first ship designed specifically for the Middle Eastern cruise market, Aroya is a ‘build and they will come’ voyage into the unknown for Saudi Arabian cruise line start-up AROYA Cruises, with an American sports bar that offers Shisha but no alcohol, and gender-segregated public spaces at certain times of the day.

At 150,000 gross tons and carrying upwards of 3,500 passengers, Aroya is one of the largest cruise ships sailing in the Middle East and a huge US $300 million gamble on the potential popularity of cruises among the local source market.

The mammoth ship, rivalling the new Prima-class from Norwegian Cruise Line in terms of gross tonnage, is setting out to prove that the Arab world will book cruises in greater numbers if ships offer them the facilities and experiences they want.

To this end, Aroya will feature an onboard experience unlike anything else in the industry. She will be the only major cruise ship in operation that is run as a ‘dry ship’, with no alcohol served onboard (whether in Saudi waters or not).

It’s a huge risk for AROYA Cruises, but the Cruise Saudi-backed brand is betting that there is a larger enough cruise source market in the Arab world to fill the ship on its Red Sea itineraries without having to rely on international fly-cruise guests.

And while on the subject of big bets, there is no casino aboard Aroya either. Instead of bars and casinos, public spaces aboard the ship are given over to cultural enrichment, relaxation and entertainment.

Dining aboard Aroya

Aboard Aroya, there are five complimentary dining options, two of which, Khuzama Restaurant and Al Waha Dining, serve as the ship’s main dining rooms. There is also the Amwaj Buffet, a staple of any major cruise line, where a wide variety of international cuisines and Arabic flavours are served.

Up here guests will find foods from around the world, from Lebanon to Mexico, and India to America, while the buffet also features a terrace dining area, appropriately called the Amwaj Terrace, where the setting—underneath a canopy of stars on the ship’s upper decks—elevates the meal.

At Khuzama Restaurant, Saudi and French culinary traditions are blended in an elegance setting, while Al Waha is an elegant option with a more mainstream array of flavourful appetisers, main courses, and desserts.

IRTH Saudi Arabian restaurant

Another option with Saudi Arabian heritage and culture centre stage is IRTH, the first Saudi restaurant at sea. IRTH’s menu is designed as a journey through the heritage and culture of the Kingdom, with traditional dishes from all regions and a dedicated area for experiencing authentic Saudi coffee.

For a taste of America aboard the Arab world’s first homegrown cruise line, guests can head to Legends Sports Lounge, where a diverse and distinctive menu offers dishes and snacks ideal for sharing during matches, with a combination of Arabian and American cuisines. Here guests can also enjoy a range of Shisha flavours.

Passengers looking for even more Americana at sea can head to the Space Diner, a traditional American diner serving foods from various regions of the country. Lounges and cafes aboard Aroya

Because AROYA Cruises is a dry cruise line, focusing on the Arabian traditions of hospitality and familial connection rather than ‘partying’, there are a plethora of lounges aboard the ship.

Al Matal Lounge invites guests to unwind in an art-filled setting, where contemporary designs and curated artworks evoke a sense of timeless elegance, with a selection of hot and cold beverages offered, alongside an array of unique shisha flavors.

The Zen Pool and Lounge up on the pool deck is a sanctuary of tranquility, offering a serene environment inspired by Arabian heritage, with a refined menu of refreshing drinks, oriental sweets, and artisanal ice creams, complemented by an array of shisha flavors.

Beats Lounge blends Arabian influences with a modern edge, featuring internationally renowned DJs and an eclectic selection of drinks and premium shisha flavours. Meanwhile, down closer to the waterline, the Promenade Lounge offers a sophisticated setting for cocktail lovers (mocktails, naturally) with sweeping sea views.

The nearby Havana Cigar Lounge is a refined retreat for cigar aficionados, providing a luxurious setting enriched by the aromas of fine cigars, and for an even more elevated ambiance, the Khuzama Lounge provides an exclusive experience with luxurious touches and exceptional service for VIP guests only.

Coral Creamery

There are a similarly wide array of cafes aboard Aroya, offering everything from specialty coffee, chocolate and ice cream to bubble tea and freshly-baked desserts. The Coral Creamery offers a selection of artisan gelato and ice creams crafted from fresh ingredients, while Coco Café is all about coffee and chocolate, pairing premium brews with a curated selection of chocolates.

Coco Cafe

Blending tradition and modernity, Marka Café invites guests to experience authentic Gulf flavors in a vibrant, contemporary space, serving light bites and traditional Arabian drinks. Melo Pearl Café meanwhile showcases a selection of desserts that are as artful as they are delicious. Each dessert is freshly made, offering unique flavors in an elegant setting.

Last but not least, Boba Bay serves a lively selection of milk and fruit teas with tapioca pearls. With flavors ranging from classic to exotic, its menu is both creative and refreshing.

Entertainment and enrichment aboard Aroya

In line with its departure from mainstream cruise trends, Aroya forgoes the typical casinos and cocktail bars in favour of more enriching pursuits. The onboard AROYA Theatre brings to life captivating performances, from traditional Middle Eastern music to international acts that reflect the global nature of the ship’s guest roster. The decision to shift the focus from the usual nightlife to live entertainment highlights the cultural focus of this trailblazing cruise line.

Aroya Theatre

For families, the Discoverers’ Zone and Captains’ Zone offer innovative spaces for children to play, learn, and grow, while teenagers find their own retreat in the Teens Club. It’s clear that the ship has been designed with all age groups in mind—balancing adult relaxation with thoughtful and engaging entertainment for younger passengers.

Blossom by AROYA represents the pinnacle of wellness at sea. A luxurious spa offering a wide range of treatments, this is where passengers can truly unwind.
