Norwegian Cruise Line reveals details on spa aboard new Prima and Viva ships

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced the first charcoal sauna at sea and two-deck indoor waterfall for the spa aboard its two upcoming ships Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva.

The two Prima-class ships, the first of an all-new series for the cruise line, will debut the Mandara Spa’s charcoal sauna, derived from Japanese and Korean wellness practices.

The spa sauna will use a radiant heat system with an outer charcoal layer to reach temperatures between 86 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

The charcoal sauna will be one of eight thermal offerings available at the spa, which also has a salt and steam room, an ice room, a flotation salt pool and infrared sauna.

The entire spa complex will be designed by architecture firm Rockwell Group and will feature a marble spiral staircase and two-deck indoor waterfall.

“The debut of our Prima Class has been all about elevating guest experiences across all the touch points that make a perfect holiday at sea, from food and beverage, entertainment, recreational activities and now spa and fitness,” said Harry Sommer, President & CEO, Norwegian Cruise Line.

“Our latest health and wellness experiences were designed to awaken the senses of our guests like never before pairing world-class design and architecture with one-of-kind offerings that truly allow our guests to unwind and escape,” he added.

The spa’s two-deck design will enable the relaxation area and the fitness center to both face forward over the bow, a first for any Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

While the spa will be available to all passengers, at an additional cost, for passengers staying in the 28 spa balcony staterooms, it will be complimentary. They will have premium access to the Mandara Spa and its thermal experiences.

All guests will have free access to the Pulse Fitness Center, with state-of-the-art fitness equipment and Yoga and spin classes available.

Another first for a Norwegian Cruise Line ship will be the Ice Room, which is intended for use post-sauna or steam bath. There will also be experiential showers employing multiple water jets and lighting effects, as well as a flotation salt pool providing an experience similar to experiencing zero gravity.

The spa will also feature relaxation beds from the Gharieni Group: the Gharieni Welnamis bed, which utilizes Binaural Acoustic & Dynamic Stimulation, acoustic and vibrational therapy, and the Wellmassage5d bed, which provides a whole-body massage experience.

New treatments at the spa include the Ocean Spa Wave Massage, during which guests relax on a water-filled cushion, and a Zero Gravity Wellness Massage.

Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva will also feature enhanced guest-favourite spa and fitness amenities, including the Vitaly Pool, steam sauna, and Finnish sauna.

With 20 treatment rooms, the spa will offer a range of beauty treatments, including massage, acupuncture, manicures and pedicures, facials and more.

Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva are the first two of six ships planned for the Prima-class, due in August 2022 and June, 2023.

Norwegian Cruise Line on Thursday confirmed that Norwegian Prima’s scheduled August 17th inaugural cruise has been cancelled due to supply chain challenges, with her maiden voyage now scheduled for August 25th.
