Cruise passengers visiting Dubai or flying into the city to board ships at Mina Rashid next year will be able to include the Ain Dubai observation wheel in their shore excursions.

The Dubai Media Office announced via Twitter that the observation wheel will open in October next year.

The tweet included a few facts about the observation wheel to put its size in context, such as its vastly greater size compared to the 167 metre High Roller observation wheel in Las Vegas, the 135 metre London Eye and even the 190 metre New York Wheel planned for Staten Island.

At 250 metres in diameter, the Ain Dubai will surpass many of Dubai’s other new landmarks for height, such as the 150 metre Dubai Frame in Zabeel Park.

It will be half the height of the Observation Deck of the Burj Khalifa in Business Bay.

The giant Ferris wheel is undergoing final construction, with the eighth and final 450-tonne temporary spoke removed from the structure and the last of the permanent spoke cables installed.

This “marks the first time the modern observation structure has been one complete wheel since construction began,” Meraas said in a statement.

The eight temporary spokes and braces were originally installed to hold the rim segments in place during the construction of the wheel.

When completed, Ain Dubai will carry 9,000 tonnes of steel and 2,400 kilometres of cable wires housed inside the main spoke cables, which is enough to reach from Dubai to Cairo if laid end-to-end.

Ain Dubai will feature 48 high-tech passenger cabins designed to accommodate 40 passengers each. They’ll be air-conditioned and some will even be licensed for rent for private parties and functions.

The observation wheel is set to open before October, 2020, ahead of the Expo 2020, but also ahead of the 2020/21 Dubai cruise season, which starts in November and ends in March and is, by all accounts, set to be the biggest (again) on record for the city.
