Angriya Cruises, India’s first home-grown cruise line launches Mumbai to Goa cruises

Angriya Cruises is the first-ever Indian owned and operated cruise line in the country, and it’s now offering 2-night round-trip cruises from Mumbai to Goa.

The cruises depart every 2 days from Mumbai’s Victoria Docks at 4pm, giving passengers a view of sunset in the Indian Ocean, with the ship arriving 14 hours later at sunrise off Goa’s Konkan coast. The ship then departs Goa in the evening and arrives in Mumbai at 9am the following morning.

The cruises are operated aboard Angriya, a former Japanese ferry that has been converted into a cruise ship.

Angriya (formerly the ro-ro ferry Ogasa) is a budget cruise ship, it has no balcony cabins, although there are sizeable outside staterooms with double beds and ensuite bathrooms and there are around 10 passengers to each crew member.

Not all the cabins have private bathroom facilities, and on what used to be the ro-ro deck in the days when the ship carried cars, there are huge dormitories where passengers can buy a bed-space rather than a cabin.

Meals and drinks aren’t included in the cruise fare, but can be bought on-board from two restaurants and bars.

The 7-deck, 131-meter ship can accommodate up to 400 passengers and has a forward-facing lounge area and bar at the stern overlooking the pool area.

By day the lounge is the social heart of the ship, and by night it turns into the on-board nightclub with popular South Asian dance music.

There are also two dining rooms and what the cruise line calls an “underwater spa and gym”, which means it’s below the waterline, unlike on most cruise ships that have the spa area up-top. It doesn’t mean the spa has an underwater view.

Angriya Cruises is primarily targeted at the growing Indian cruise market, with local cuisine and entertainment on offer and the main language on-board is Hindi.

The ship has been designed to cater to everyone’s budget requirements, a bunk bed in the dormitory costs Rs 4,300 (US $58) for the 2-night cruise, which is roughly the price of one night aboard your average mainstream cruise ship.

An inside cabin costs Rs 7,650 (US $104) and the best cabins, the double-bed outside staterooms, will set you back Rs 12,000 (US $164).

Meals aren’t included in the fare, but passengers can buy a meal package that includes a buffet dinner and breakfast with non-alcoholic drinks for an extra Rs 2,000.
