Liberty of the Seas completes catering, dining and accommodation upgrades

Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas has completed a modernisation refit and refurbishment project covering accommodation, dining, and public areas across the ship.

The work was carried out at Damen Shipyard and completed in May 2026, with Almaco Group serving as turnkey supplier for elements of the project. Its scope covered engineering, procurement, installation, and delivery.

The project included the conversion of existing public spaces into new passenger accommodation, alongside work on several food and beverage venues.

“The successful delivery of the project relied on close coordination between all parties involved, supported by thorough preplanning and the ability to adapt to changes along the way,” said Baptiste Guillou, Project Manager, Almaco Group.

“Good collaboration with Royal Caribbean and Damen Shipyard played a key role in ensuring smooth execution. Almaco is pleased to continue its cooperation with both partners and looks forward to future projects together,” he added.

Several areas of Liberty of the Seas were converted to create additional passenger cabins as part of the work.

On Deck 2, a former conference area was transformed into 24 cabins. The conversion required structural modifications and the installation of raised flooring.

The ship’s former library on Deck 10 was also removed and replaced with four cabins and a new corridor. Steel partitioning was among the structural work required for the conversion.

New cabins

Additional accommodation was created higher in the ship. Part of the gym and former spa area on Deck 11 was rebuilt to accommodate eight larger cabins, with the project involving structural steel work.

On Deck 12, part of the Adventure Ocean children’s area was converted into 10 family-type suites. Work in this section required coordination with other contractors carrying out structural modifications in adjacent areas.

Other existing spaces across Liberty of the Seas were also converted to create additional passenger accommodation.

The project extended to the ship’s dining and beverage facilities. Almaco’s catering work covered a galley, a pantry, and three bar areas associated with Starbucks, The Lime & Coconut, and El Loco Fresh.

One of the larger public-area conversions took place on Deck 4, where the former Sabor restaurant was transformed into Izumi, Royal Caribbean’s Japanese restaurant concept.

The work on Izumi incorporated both catering systems and interior outfitting, with Almaco’s catering and accommodation teams working together on the conversion.

The project formed part of a broader programme of changes aboard the 2007-built Liberty of the Seas. The Freedom-class vessel was constructed at what was then Aker Yards in Turku, Finland, and has undergone a number of updates during its service with Royal Caribbean.
