Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has introduced an expanded range of pre- and post-cruise programmes for its 2027/2028 season.

The programmes extend the scope of its itineraries beyond embarkation and disembarkation ports with a series of curated onshore experiences.

The Hamburg-based operator is integrating these programmes across selected sailings on its luxury and expedition fleet, including MS Europa, MS Europa 2, and the HANSEATIC-class expedition ships, offering passengers additional travel components before departure or following the conclusion of their voyage.

The new offering encompasses a range of formats, from structured group itineraries to fully bespoke arrangements, reflecting what the company describes as a shift in demand towards more flexible and personalised travel extensions.

Our pre- and post-cruise programmes enable our guests to experience destinations more intensively both before and after their cruise,” said Isolde Susset, Managing Director, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. “These additional onshore experiences blend seamlessly into the overall experience offered by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.”

The programmes are designed to operate across a wide range of ports, with particular emphasis on destinations where logistical complexity or geographic remoteness can make independent travel planning more challenging.

Options include guided tours in major cities, accommodation packages with transfers, and individually tailored itineraries arranged through the company’s concierge network.

Three distinct categories underpin the portfolio. Guided programmes are aimed at small groups and typically include structured sightseeing itineraries led by tour guides, with accommodation in selected hotels and, in some cases, lodges or resorts. Activities vary depending on location, ranging from standard cultural visits to more active pursuits such as hiking, cycling, or kayaking.

Private programmes provide a more flexible format, centred on pre-arranged hotel stays and transfers, allowing passengers to explore destinations independently while maintaining a structured travel framework. At the highest level, fully tailored arrangements offer customised itineraries based on individual preferences, developed in collaboration with local partners and adjusted to the duration and nature of each stay.

Susset said that demand for these options has evolved in recent years, with a growing number of passengers seeking more personalised travel extensions alongside traditional guided experiences.

“Over the years, demand for these offers has become increasingly more nuanced. Whilst many guests continue to appreciate the benefits of guided programmes led by our tour guides, there is also growing interest in private and bespoke arrangements,” she said.

The expanded portfolio forms part of a broader effort to align cruise itineraries with wider travel trends, incorporating additional accommodation, access to locations beyond standard cruise excursions, and integration with international flight schedules.

While the programmes are positioned as optional extensions, their inclusion across a broad range of sailings suggests they are becoming a more central component of itinerary planning, particularly on longer or expedition-focused voyages where time ashore is a key element of the overall travel experience.
