Ras Al Khaimah is steadily establishing itself as a regular stop on Arabian Gulf cruise itineraries, with authorities in the northern emirate of the UAE increasingly targeting smaller ships and experience-focused travellers rather than large-scale port traffic.
The emirate has moved from sporadic cruise visits to a structured winter season programme, operating between November and April during the annual Middle East winter cruise season.
Industry officials say the aim is to complement the broader tourism offering by providing a different type of shore experience to the region’s more urban cruise ports.
Iyad Rasbey, Vice President of Destination Tourism Development at the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, told Khaleej Times that cruise activity now forms part of the destination’s long-term visitor strategy rather than a stand-alone sector.
“Cruise tourism in Ras Al Khaimah is positioned as an experience-led segment that supports our wider destination strategy,” said Rasbey. “Over recent years, it has developed into a more organised seasonal offering, with the emirate increasingly featured in premium regional itineraries that value authentic shore experiences.”
Celestyal Discovery’s weekly calls under a three-year agreement announced earlier at Arabian Travel Market, and which began during the current season, marked a significant development.
The arrangement provides a predictable schedule of visits throughout the winter months and is expected to raise the port’s visibility among international cruise operators.
Passenger traffic has been gradually increasing. During the 2022/23 season, the port handled six cruise calls by four vessels, and authorities expect higher numbers as additional operators test Gulf itineraries that include the emirate.
The tourism authority has also hosted familiarisation visits for a number of luxury and expedition cruise brands as it seeks to position the destination within the higher-end segment of the market.
Unlike major regional hubs such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah is focusing on ships with lower passenger capacity. Port facilities can accommodate vessels of around 200 metres in length, aligning with boutique and luxury lines whose passengers tend to spend more time ashore and participate in organised excursions.
Typical shore programmes centre on outdoor and heritage experiences rather than city sightseeing. Visitors are taken to the mountains of Jebel Jais, desert areas, archaeological sites, and traditional coastal locations including the Suwaidi Pearl Farm, reflecting the emirate’s maritime history.
These activities are intended to provide a contrast within multi-port itineraries that also include Doha, Bahrain, and Omani ports.
Local tourism stakeholders view cruise passengers as an opportunity to broaden economic activity beyond resorts and beach hotels. Excursions generate business for transport companies, guides, cultural sites, restaurants and retailers, while also introducing the destination to travellers who may return independently in the future.
Looking ahead, officials expect cruise visits to continue expanding through longer-term partnerships with operators specialising in destination-focused itineraries. Rasbey said the sector will play a role in meeting wider tourism targets for the coming decade.
“As we move toward our goal of attracting 3.5 million visitors by 2030, cruise tourism will remain a strategic channel for welcoming high-value travellers and showcasing Ras Al Khaimah’s unique identity on the international stage,” he said.
