Carnival Tropicale to homeport in Galveston as fleet expansion continues

Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed that its fifth Excel-class ship, Carnival Tropicale, will homeport in Galveston when it enters service in 2028.

The deployment reinforces the line’s long-standing presence in the Texas market and will see Carnival Tropicale join Carnival Jubilee in Galveston, positioning two of the newest ships in the fleet at the same homeport.

The move builds on more than 25 years of operations from the Port of Galveston, where Carnival currently maintains a multi-ship presence and has established itself as the leading operator.

The ship takes its name from the original MS Tropicale, which entered service in 1982 as Carnival’s first purpose-built vessel and played a central role in shaping the line’s modern product.

The new ship is expected to reflect that legacy while incorporating the design framework established across the Excel class, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion and large-scale onboard facilities.

Carnival’s continued investment in Galveston reflects the port’s growing role within the North American cruise market. The line currently homeports four ships in the Texas port, with itineraries drawing passengers from across the southern United States.

In 2024, Carnival became the first operator to carry more than 10 million passengers through Galveston, highlighting sustained demand in the region.

The addition of Carnival Tropicale will further expand capacity at the port, with the vessel expected to accommodate more than 6,000 passengers. The ship will also carry the Star of Texas emblem on its bow, a feature introduced with Carnival Jubilee as part of the line’s branding in the state.

On board, the ship will incorporate features developed across recent Excel-class vessels, alongside new concepts.

These include an expanded waterpark complex under the Carnival WaterWorks Ultra concept, as well as a new zone referred to as Sunsation Point, focused on family-oriented recreation and entertainment. Additional dining and entertainment venues are also planned, building on the line’s existing onboard model.

The deployment of a second Excel-class ship in Galveston indicates a continued focus on large-ship operations from the port, supported by infrastructure upgrades and increasing passenger volumes.

The port has seen consistent growth in recent years, driven in part by year-round deployments and the introduction of newer vessels. With Carnival Tropicale scheduled to enter service in 2028, the move reinforces Galveston’s position as a key homeport within Carnival’s North American network, as the line continues to expand capacity in established regional markets.
