Explora Journeys’ decision to deploy to Arabian Gulf for first time driven by demand

MSC Cruises is set to elevate the luxury cruise offering in the Middle East with the deployment of its high-end brand, Explora Journeys, to the Gulf and Red Sea for the 2026/27 winter season

The move marks the first time the brand will homeport in the region and signals growing demand for ultra-luxury cruise products among both international travellers and the Gulf’s increasingly cruise-savvy local market.

According to Angelo Capurro, Executive Director of MSC Cruises, the decision to base Explora Journeys in the region was driven by strong regional interest in upscale cruising, coupled with the brand’s global growth strategy.

Explora II will sail a range of itineraries in the Arabian Gulf out of Dubai

“We strongly believe in this region,” Capurro told Cruise Arabia & Africa during Arabian Travel Market 2025 in Dubai. “We see a lot of interest coming from this part of the world for this kind of experience.”

Explora Journeys, launched in 2023 as MSC Group’s entry into the luxury cruise segment, offers an all-suite fleet with significantly larger-than-average accommodations, expansive outdoor and indoor public spaces, and an emphasis on personalisation, privacy, and destination-driven itineraries.

Capurro highlighted that Explora ships are built with space and comfort as core design principles, catering well to the preferences of GCC travellers.

“Many of our guests from this region travel as families, and they value large suites and privacy,” he noted. “The ships are designed with fewer passengers, larger rooms—up to 180 square metres for our top suites—and generous public areas. Guests can enjoy the feeling of exclusivity and space throughout their journey.”

The Treasury in Petra

The itineraries for Explora’s Middle East season span both the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea, including iconic destinations such as AlUla, Luxor, and Petra.

Capurro underscored the appeal of combining cultural discovery with onboard luxury. “In one week, guests will be able to see some of the most beautiful tourist experiences available—whether it’s Petra, Luxor, or AlUla—without compromising on comfort.”

The upcoming deployment follows the strong performance of MSC’s contemporary ships in the region.

Capurro confirmed that MSC World Europa will return for another Arabian Gulf season in 2026/27, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to the Middle East across multiple market segments—from mass to premium and now luxury.

With Explora Journeys joining the regional cruise mix, the Middle East is poised to become a key frontier for luxury cruising.
