Royal Caribbean COVID protocols contain two cases aboard Adventure of the Seas

On her second cruise since resuming services out of Nassau, Bahamas, Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas has prevented the spread of COVID-19 after two passengers tested positive.

Adventure of the Seas was mid-way through her second roundtrip cruise out of Nassau when routine testing of all passengers revealed two positive cases, according to the cruise line.

Both of the passengers were under the age of 16 years and unvaccinated, but further testing of all passengers in their group revealed no further cases of the virus. Subsequent testing of more passengers using contact tracing technology also came back negative.

Of the two positive cases, one of the children is asymptomatic, while the other has mild symptoms, according to Royal Caribbean.

All the passengers in the immediate travel group are reported to be vaccinated, while all passengers identified through contact tracing are also vaccinated.

“The guests and their travel party disembarked today in Freeport, The Bahamas and are on their way home to Florida,” Royal Caribbean said in a statement.

“Ninety-two percent of our guests on Adventure are fully vaccinated and the remaining 8% are under 16 years old. One hundred percent of our crew are fully vaccinated,” it added.

This is the third incident of COVID-19 being successfully identified and contained aboard cruise ships operating passenger services.

MSC Seaside in the Mediterranean and Celebrity Millennium out of St Maarten reported COVID-19 cases earlier this month, but both were able to contain those infected and prevent any further spread of the virus.

Both ships’ operations were unaffected by the cases.

The cruise industry shut down globally in March last year when the virus first emerged, and cruise ships began to return to service in the Mediterranean and Asia in summer last year.

Since then, around 400,000 cruise passengers have been carried, with fewer than 250 cases among passengers and crew (the vast majority of them being crew aboard cruise ships that remain in warm lay-up).

The latest positive cases aboard Adventure of the Seas reinforce the importance of passengers purchasing travel insurance that covers COVID-19 medical costs, quarantine and transport expenses.
