Royal Caribbean reveals more details about Quantum of the Seas refit and refurbishment

Quantum of the Seas, the lead ship in her class and the innovative cruise ship that introduced the Bionic bar tender, the massive Seaplex with dodgem cars and the crowd favourite, Two70 Lounge, is now five years old and due for her first major refit.

As previously reported, the refit and refurbishment will take place in Singapore and will include options intended to make the ship appeal better to the Asian and Indian source markets, however, now Royal Caribbean have also confirmed some other aspects of the upcoming changes.

New features destined for the ship include a pop-up escape room and pop-up laser tag arena (both of which are most likely to be located within the Seaplex, a huge entertainment, activities and sports area on the ship’s upper deck aft).

The multimillion-dollar refit will take place throughout the month of October, prior to the ship’s Singapore cruise season, which begins this coming November, with 4, 5 and 7-night roundtrip cruises on offer to Kuala Lumpur (Port Klang), Bangkok (Laem Chabang), Phuket and Ho Chi Minh City, among others.

Quantum of the Seas has been homeporting in China for the past few years, and was actually custom-designed for the Chinese market.

The refit and refurbishment will therefore see a lot of her soft furnishings such as curtains, carpets, sofas and so on not only replaced due to wear-and-tear, but also in order to make her interiors appeal more to the Southeast Asian market.

Other changes will also be made to dining areas and menu options. When Quantum was sent to China, pecialty dining venues such as Johnny Rockets were turned into a Kung Fu Panda noodle house and Wonderland’s menu was reimagined by Michelin-star chef Da Dong.

Royal Caribbean representatives for the Indian cruise market have also indicated that the ship will offer more entertainment options to suit them when she emerges from her refit.

“More Bollywood music may be played at the pool or disco parties, and more jewellery gift sets, which are popular with Indians, may be procured for sailings that host a higher number of them on board,” says Royal Caribbean’s Asia-Pacific managing director Sean Treacy.

Quantum of the Seas will be based in Singapore from November until April 2020 and will return for a longer season in Southeast Asia from October 2020 until April 2021.
