Norwegian Jewel gets major refurbishment ahead of Asian and Alaskan cruise season

Norwegian Jewel is the latest cruise ship to get Norwegian Cruise Line’s “Norwegian Edge” refurbishment.

She went into dry-dock for two weeks, where she received new staterooms, redesigned cabins, upgraded public spaces, new lounges and even a new due of theatre productions. See our full review of her refit here.

Norwegian Edge is a US $400-million program to bring the older tonnage in the fleet up-to-date with newer ships such as the Breakaway Plus class.

“Norwegian Jewel’s complete renovation showcases our dedication to providing guests with quality experiences across the fleet and around the world,” said Andy Stuart, President and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line.

“Not only are we revealing updated designs and accommodations throughout the ship, but guests will also enjoy new venues and three incredibly exciting shows, one of which premiers for the first time on Norwegian Jewel,” he added.

All 1,188 cabins were refreshed with new TVs and USB outlets, as well as new carpets, artworks and other soft furnishings.

Two new 1,200sqft Haven Deluxe Owner’s Suites were added to the ship, complete with 567sqft balconies and two private hot tubs. Each can accommodate up to four people.

The Haven’s Courtyard was also updated, and additional cabanas were added to the sun deck.

During the refurbishment, Norwegian Jewel’s Sky High Bar was replaced with The Pit Stop, and FYZZ Cabaret Lounge was transformed into the Bliss Ultra Lounge.

Each has a unique atmosphere, The Pit Stop is an American-style diner with vintage license plates, gas station signage and other classic car elements, while Bliss Ultra Lounge is a chic late-night entertainment venue.

Nearly all other dining areas on the ship were updated, along with all her public spaces. In the Atrium, for example, the space has been completely transformed and now centres around a custom-designed chandelier.

Other changes here include new flooring, refurbished reception and shore excursion desks, and the addition of banquette seating and a large TV screen.

Two new production shows will debut aboard Norwegian Jewel. Rock You Tonight is a medley of songs from the best rock bands of the ’70s, including Queen, Journey and The Who, while Velvet is an Australian hit musical with circus acrobatics, as well as cabaret and burlesque elements that makes its debut at sea on Norwegian Jewel.

Norwegian Jewel will debut in Sydney, Australia on December 1st, 2018. She will sail seven- to 19-night itineraries from Sydney, Hong Kong and Singapore before joining Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy in Alaska for the summer 2019 season.
