Video – Humpback whale gets trapped in Sohar Port

Video has emerged of a humpback whale that became trapped inside the waters of Sohar Port in Oman.

According to officials, the whale entered the port on Monday. The video below was filmed from a ship conducting berthing operations at the port.

He told Cruise Arabia & Africa that after an hour or so the Omani Coast Guard arrived and escorted the whale back out into deeper water.

Port officials were reportedly concerned for the whale’s safety due to the commercial traffic within the port, and because of the higher temperature of the water in port compared to the open ocean.

Studies by the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) reveal that there are less than 100 Arabian Sea Humpback whales left in Oman’s waters, which is a cause of concern.

“The Arabian Sea Humpback Whale is the only non-migratory species of humpback whales in the world. It is assumed they feed and breed in the waters of Oman. There are less than 100 individuals estimated in this endangered population,” ESO Programmes Director, Suaad Al Harthi said in a recent report.
