MSC Group to expand Bahamas footprint with 2nd private island, Sandy Cay

MSC Group’s Cruise Division has announced plans to develop Sandy Cay, a second private island destination in The Bahamas, scheduled to open in 2028.

The island will be located adjacent to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, expanding the company’s footprint in the region and introducing a second, differentiated experience for its cruise brands.

Sandy Cay is being positioned as a more secluded alternative to Ocean Cay, designed for guests sailing with MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys. The development will focus on lower-density beach environments, with aragonite sands and an emphasis on privacy, in contrast to the broader, multi-use facilities already established on Ocean Cay.

Ocean Cay, which opened in 2019 following the transformation of a former industrial sand extraction site, has become a central component of MSC Cruises’ Caribbean deployment.

The island was developed with a focus on environmental restoration, including coral propagation efforts, marine conservation initiatives, and the creation of multiple beach zones, dining venues, and leisure facilities. It serves as a dedicated port of call across a wide range of Caribbean itineraries.

The introduction of Sandy Cay suggests a strategic extension of this model, with segmentation between a larger, activity-led private island and a more exclusive, retreat-style destination. While detailed design elements for Sandy Cay have not yet been disclosed, the concept aligns with broader industry trends towards diversified private island experiences, particularly in the premium and luxury segments.

Alongside the announcement, MSC Group has also outlined further enhancements to Ocean Cay, including additional dining venues, new beach concepts tailored for both families and adults, and expanded relaxation areas. These upgrades are expected to build on the island’s existing infrastructure while refining the overall guest experience.

The dual development approach indicates a longer-term strategy focused on evolving private island offerings in line with changing passenger expectations, while maintaining an environmental framework shaped during the original Ocean Cay redevelopment.

Sandy Cay will be integrated into itineraries for both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys from its planned 2028 debut, although specific deployment details have yet to be confirmed. Further information on the project is expected to be released at a later stage.
