Cruise lines maintain confidence in Arabian Gulf despite short-term disruption

Despite short-term deployment changes by some cruise operators, cruise lines continue to signal long-term confidence in the Arabian Gulf as a winter cruise destination, with multiple ships already open for booking in the 2027/28 season.

Recent announcements by Costa Cruises and AIDA Cruises confirmed that both brands will not operate cruises in the Middle East during the winter of 2026/27, with ships redeployed to alternative regions. Costa Smeralda will instead operate itineraries in the Canary Islands and Madeira, while AIDAprima’s planned Gulf programme has also been withdrawn for that season.

The decisions were framed as early operational adjustments aimed at providing certainty for guests and travel partners amid an uncertain regional outlook for that specific winter.

However, the long-term deployment plans of several cruise lines suggest continued confidence in the region’s cruise market beyond the current disruption. Multiple brands already have voyages open for sale for the 2027/28 winter season, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi continuing to feature prominently as homeports.

AIDA Cruises is among those confirming a return to the region. The German brand has scheduled AIDAperla to operate a series of Arabian Gulf itineraries during the winter of 2027/28, including seven-night cruises from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and extended 14-night voyages that combine Gulf ports with destinations in Oman.

Bookings already available for that season show weekly departures running from December through early April, with itineraries marketed under the brand’s “Orient” programme.

MSC Cruises is also continuing to market Gulf sailings for the same period. MSC World Europa is scheduled to operate seven-night cruises from Dubai and Abu Dhabi throughout the winter season, linking the United Arab Emirates with ports in neighbouring Gulf states.

Luxury operators are also maintaining a presence in forward bookings. Explora Journeys has opened reservations for a series of itineraries aboard Explora I, including voyages from Dubai exploring destinations in the Arabian Gulf and Oman. The programme includes sailings such as “A Journey from Shimmering Skylines to the Gulf’s Hidden Gems” and “A Journey to the Whispering Sands of Oman”.

Celestyal Cruises has also opened bookings for Celestyal Journey’s return to the region, with its “Desert Days” programme offering seven-night cruises roundtrip from Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Further into the season, additional lines are scheduled to operate voyages through the region. Silversea’s Silver Shadow, Crystal Symphony, and Oceania Cruises’ Vista all list itineraries departing from Dubai in early 2028, linking the Gulf with destinations in the Mediterranean, Africa, and the Indian Ocean.

The continued availability of forward bookings highlights the long-term role the Arabian Gulf plays in the global cruise deployment cycle. The region has developed into one of the cruise industry’s key winter destinations over the past decade, supported by modern cruise terminals in ports including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha.

Seasonal deployment in the Gulf typically runs from November through April, providing cruise lines with an alternative winter market while ships reposition between Europe and Asia.

While the 2026/27 season will see a reduced presence from some brands, the scheduling of multiple ships for the following winter indicates that cruise operators continue to view the region as strategically important for long-term deployment.

Cruise deployment decisions are often made several years in advance, meaning that the continuation of bookings for 2027/28 reflects ongoing confidence in the region’s long-term stability and demand from international cruise passengers.

As a result, the Gulf cruise market appears likely to resume a more typical deployment pattern in the seasons following the current disruption, with Dubai expected to remain one of the industry’s principal winter homeports.
