Oceania Cruises reveals details of 5th Sonata Class ship for delivery in 2037

Oceania Cruises has ordered a fifth vessel in its new Sonata Class series, with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri scheduled to deliver the ship in 2037, extending the line’s long-term fleet expansion programme.

The additional ship follows the launch of sales for the lead vessel, Oceania Sonata, and confirms the class as the company’s primary platform for future growth.

The first ship is due to enter service in August 2027, with sister ships to follow over the next decade. The order forms part of a multi-vessel order made by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings for all three brands.

The Sonata Class introduces a larger design than previous Oceania vessels, with expanded accommodation and new suite categories.

The ships are also planned to include reconfigured upper-deck accommodation and a broader range of dining venues compared with the line’s existing fleet.

“Oceania Sonata will set a new benchmark for spaciousness, artistry and residential comfort,” said Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer, Oceania Cruises.

Two new dining concepts are planned for the class.

La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France is being developed in collaboration with the Maîtres Cuisiniers de France association, while Nikkei Kitchen will focus on Japanese-Peruvian cuisine, a style originating in the late nineteenth century through migration between the two countries.

The class is also being introduced alongside a shift to an adults-only onboard environment across the brand. The move follows feedback from repeat passengers and aligns the line more closely with other upper-premium and luxury operators targeting couples and long-stay travellers.

Oceania Arietta, the first sister ship, is scheduled to open for sale in 2027. The newbuild programme will progressively replace older tonnage while increasing overall capacity.

By placing an order more than a decade ahead of delivery, the company secures construction capacity at a time when major European shipyards are heavily committed to cruise and naval contracts into the 2030s.

The initial deployment of Oceania Sonata will include Mediterranean voyages departing from Rome, Barcelona, and Athens before repositioning to the Caribbean and Central America.

The ship is also planned to undertake a daylight Panama Canal transit, an itinerary format increasingly favoured in the upper-premium sector.

For the wider industry, the order reflects continued investment in smaller luxury and upper-premium vessels rather than large-capacity ships. While contemporary cruise lines are focusing on ships carrying more than 5,000 passengers, the Sonata Class follows a different trend, with operators prioritising higher space ratios and destination-intensive itineraries over scale.

The additional order also suggests sustained confidence in long-haul fly-cruise demand.

Newbuilds of this size typically rely on passengers travelling internationally to join voyages, making air connectivity and homeport infrastructure important factors in deployment planning.

As deliveries extend into the late 2030s, fleet planning decisions made today are effectively shaping where cruise lines expect passenger demand to develop over the next decade.
