Ambassador Cruise Line sends Ambience to UK for major refit and refurbishment

Ambassador Cruise Line will send its second ship Ambience for a scheduled dry dock at A&P Tyne in Hebburn, Tyne and Wear, on January 7th, 2026, commencing a three-week programme of technical maintenance and refurbishment works.

The project is one of the most substantial upgrades undertaken by the company since the ship joined its fleet and follows the recent refit of fleetmate Ambition at A&P Falmouth as part of the UK line’s ongoing investment in its fleet.

The company has positioned the programme as a continuation of its longer-term fleet renewal strategy, combining technical reliability with updates to onboard facilities.

“Ambience’s dry dock in Hebburn represents a significant investment in our first lady of the sea and underlines our long-term commitment to maintaining the highest technical and hospitality standards across our fleet,” said Nick Hughes, Chief Operating Officer at Ambassador Cruise Line.

“Working with A&P Tyne allows us to support UK maritime expertise while ensuring Ambience continues to deliver the affordable quality and warmest welcome at sea that our guests value so highly,” he added.

The scope of the dry dock includes extensive technical works focused on both safety and operational efficiency.

Key elements of the refit include upgrades to the propulsion control system, overhauls of the ship’s engines, replacement of rudder bearings, and renewal of SCR catalyst elements.

In addition, substantial steel and structural work will be carried out throughout the 35-year-old vessel’s tanks and hull areas, alongside a programme of internal pipework, HVAC, and mechanical improvements.

Alongside these technical works, the company confirmed that the project will also deliver a wide-ranging programme of guest-facing enhancements across accommodation and public spaces.

Cabins and suites will receive additional plug sockets, as well as USB and USB-C ports, while guest lifts will undergo refurbishment. Selected decks will see carpets replaced and furnishings refreshed, with new finishes introduced in suites, balcony cabins, and several public areas.

A phased programme to replace windows and improve visibility will begin during the dry-docking period, and the Green Sea Spa is set to receive a refresh, including new flooring, tiling, artwork, and greenery intended to improve the overall onboard environment.

According to the company, the investment forms part of a broader approach to fleet renewal that balances affordability, reliability, and the onboard experience. The works at A&P Tyne will also provide practical training opportunities for apprentices and skilled workers, with Ambience expected to become the largest cruise ship to enter dry dock in the North East of England in more than 20 years.

Once the refit is complete, Ambience will return to service at her home port of London Cruise Terminal at Tilbury. She is scheduled to depart shortly afterwards on a 40-night voyage to the Caribbean, marking her return to operations following one of the most comprehensive upgrade programmes undertaken by Ambassador Cruise Line to date.
