Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat, the primary cruise port in Oman, recorded 190 cruise calls in 2024, exceeding its target of 134 vessels by 41%, reflecting the port’s growing role in Oman’s expanding cruise tourism sector.

Ahmed al Sawai, Director of Oman Vision 2040 Office at Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT), shared the figures during an interview with Oman TV. 

He highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance the port’s capacity and appeal, led by Omran Group, which oversees its development. 

“Port Sultan Qaboos is one of three key ports in the sultanate that is actively working to attract tourists from around the world,” he said, adding that cruise tourism is key to Oman’s broader tourism agenda.

A study commissioned by the ministry underscores this point, noting that the cruise industry serves as a crucial gateway for introducing Oman’s cultural heritage and natural beauty to a global audience. 

Cruise visitors often explore multiple destinations within a short time frame, creating ripple effects across the tourism and hospitality sectors. By boosting cruise tourism, Oman not only increases visitor numbers but also diversifies its tourist profile, attracting high-spending international travellers.

To leverage this potential, the ministry has implemented a short-term plan involving 13 ports across the country, aiming to attract a higher number of international visitors. Port Sultan Qaboos stands out as a pivotal hub in this network, not only because of its strategic location but also due to the extensive investments being made to modernise its infrastructure and enhance its offerings.

Sawai highlighted transformative developments within Muscat governorate, which play a crucial role in enhancing the region’s cruise tourism appeal. Under the government’s 2021-2025 Five-Year Plan, 97 tourism projects have been launched. Among these, 34 hotel projects have been completed, while 30 are under construction, significantly expanding accommodation capacity to meet rising demand.

Eight integrated tourist complexes are part of these initiatives, blending accommodation, entertainment, and leisure services. These complexes aim to provide comprehensive visitor experiences while contributing to the national economy. By offering world-class facilities, these projects are expected to enhance Oman’s reputation as a premium cruise destination.

The developments at Port Sultan Qaboos and across Muscat reflect a growing recognition of cruise tourism as a critical driver of economic growth. 

For Oman, this sector serves as a bridge to international markets, leveraging the country’s unique blend of natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and modern infrastructure. 

The rise in cruise calls at Port Sultan Qaboos is a clear indicator of increasing demand for Oman as a destination, which, in turn, fuels further investment and development.

By enhancing the cruise experience, Oman positions itself competitively within the global tourism market, attracting new operators and fostering repeat visits.
