Viking has signed a newbuild contract with Fincantieri for the construction of two new cruise ships to the same design as its existing fleet of nine ocean cruise ships, with options for an additional four.

The two confirmed orders are due for delivery in 2030, while the additional four, if confirmed, will be delivered in 2031 and 2032. Fincantieri in a press release did not confirm the value of the contract, but described it as a large order of at least US $500 million.

The new ships will be built according to the latest environmental rules and navigation regulations and will be equipped with the most modern safety systems, according to the shipyard, which has built every Viking ocean cruise ship.

They will boast all the latest innovations in the development of eco-friendly fuels and sustainable zero- emission power generation systems, and will feature the same minimalist, Scandinavian luxury characteristic of the rest of the fleet.

“This new order represents another step forward in our collaboration with Viking, further consolidating Fincantieri as a global leader in naval engineering innovation,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri. “This agreement not only strengthens our order book, but it ensures further depth of work in our shipyards over the long term, positioning us at the forefront of driving the industry towards energy transition.”

“Our ability to integrate cutting-edge technologies is a testament to our commitment to building ships for tomorrow, aligned with the climate challenges and opportunities in the cruise industry, as outlined in our Industrial Plan,” he added. 

With a gross tonnage of 54,300 and capacity for 998 passengers in 499 cabins, the ship’s will be slightly larger than the current ships in the fleet, which are all 47,800 gross tons and carry 980 passengers.

The agreement reflects the strong and long-lasting relationship between Fincantieri and Viking, dating back to 2012 and encompassing 23 ships, including two purpose-built expedition units of the Norwegian subsidiary Vard, the nine ships currently in operation, and a further 12 on order.

Viking includes the nine-ship fleet of Viking Ocean Cruises and the Viking River Cruises brand, which offers cruising along the rivers of Europe, Russia, China, Southeast Asia and Egypt.

The cruise line’s ocean cruise ships feature two pools, a spa and fitness centre, three restaurants, multiple lounges and bars, as well as a theatre, sports deck, and retail area.
