Wind Surf first of three Windstar sailing ships to undergo major refit and refurbishment

Windstar Cruises is sending its classic sailing cruise ship Wind Surf to Cadiz, Spain in November for the first phase of a major bow-to-stern refit and refurbishment.

The project, which will significantly modernise the vessel and extend its service life, will see every public area and cabin of the 35-year-old ship upgraded or redesigned.

The refurbishment will include updated layouts, new furniture, upgraded lighting and the addition of custom artwork.

Premium Suites will also receive upgrades, and new technology, including interactive TVs, which will be installed in all staterooms.

Wind Surf will debut its phase one refresh on its Classic Caribbean holiday cruise departing December 21st, 2024, followed by other sailings, including a 55-day Grand Caribbean Adventure in early 2025.

“Wind Surf has become a beloved choice among our longtime Windstar guests,” said Stijn Creupelandt, Chief Operating Officer, Windstar Cruises. “Many of our guests return each year to sail on this yacht, and we’re thrilled to offer a refreshed atmosphere and updated technology on board to enhance their comfort.”

“I can’t wait to personally welcome our guests during the holiday sailing and celebrate this exciting transformation in a festive setting,” he added.

Phase 1 of Wind Surf’s renovation will see the lobby completely redesigned to create a more welcoming atmosphere, with additional seating and a chic, boutique hotel feel. The adjacent retail area will also be expanded, offering guests a refined luxury shopping experience.

Amphora restaurant and bar

The Compass Rose bar and lounge will get an updated, modern décor, with a stylish bar, and a new stage for live performances. Dining at the Amphora main dining room will be elevated with a new sea-inspired design, larger chairs, and a variety of new seating arrangements.

Out on the pool deck, guests can look forward to enhanced ocean views, a tropical design aesthetic, and new outdoor furniture, setting the scene for a vibrant poolside atmosphere. The suites have also received attention, with the introduction of themed Broadmoor and Sea Island Suites inspired by luxury resorts.

The Owner’s Suite will also be redesigned to exude a refreshed and sophisticated nautical charm.

Phase 2 of the refit and refurbishment project will focus on further stateroom upgrades and improvements to additional dining venues and fitness areas, with completion scheduled for December 2026.

Wind Surf is the first vessel in Windstar’s sailing fleet to go into drydock, similar updates are also planned for Wind Star and Wind Spirit, as part of a multi-year initiative to modernise the fleet.

This follows the major US $210 million refurbishment programme carried out on the cruise line’s three powered vessels, Wind Pride, Breeze, and Legend between 2018 and 2019 as part of the Star Plus initiative that saw them stretched by 26 meters, with new amenities and features added.

These modernisations and upgrades to the sailing and motor fleet will bring all six current Windstar vessels on-par with its two new ships that are currently under construction, Star Seeker and Star Explorer, due for delivery in 2025 and 2026.
