Historic Sea Cloud sailing cruise ship to undergo life-extending refurbishment in 2025

Sea Cloud Cruises’ has announced that its classic sailing cruise ship Sea Cloud will undergo an extensive refit and refurbishment following her 2025 European season.

The 93-year-old vessel, which started out life in 1931 as the world’s largest private yacht, will spend the 2025 summer season sailing the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Canary Islands and the Atlantic before heading into dry-dock.

Guests sailing onboard Sea Cloud and her fleetmates Sea Cloud II and Sea Cloud Spirit, can expect special events onboard and ashore during the 2025 season, celebrating the history of the historic ship.

“The 2025 season promises to be one of special celebration as our beloved Sea Cloud sails to her guests’ most beloved Caribbean and European ports, before a well-earned rest and refurbishment,” said Mirell Reyes, President of Sea Cloud Cruises North America. 

“We will celebrate Sea Cloud’s legacy and traditions on all our ships throughout the year before awaiting her triumphant return to service,” Reyes added.

The refit and refurbishment project for Sea Cloud will be overseen by Sea Cloud Cruises Managing Director and Chief Technical Officer Adam Pazdzioch, who also oversaw Sea Cloud’s last major refurbishment in 2010.

Pazdzioch will be in charge of making sure that the work done to Sea Cloud keeps her feeling fresh and new for guests, while also remaining true to her original design, which gives the ship it’s intangible charm.

When she was first designed by her original owner Marjorie Merriweather Post (who had a degree in naval engineering), golden swan-shaped water taps, magnificent marble fireplaces, and exclusive French antiques were included, and to this day the interior remains as Ms Post created.

“Sea Cloud is a majestic vessel and continues to leave those who step onboard her in awe, dating back to the days of her original owner Marjorie Merriweather Post and American designers Cox & Stevens,” said Pazdzioch. 

“It is an honour to serve as her caretaker through this upcoming dry dock as our team painstakingly prepares her for continued service well beyond her 100th birthday,” he added.

It is fitting that Sea Cloud’s 2025 summer season begins in the Caribbean as it was in Bermuda that she was first handed over to Marjorie Merriweather Post, and it was in the Caribbean that she later served as an unofficial ship of state for US statesmen and diplomats during the 1940s and 50s.
