Saudi Arabia is putting in place plans to better accomodate international visitors, particularly cruise tourists, in its historic areas, such as Jeddah Historic District.
Jeddah Historic District, within Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s primary cruise port on its west coast on the Red Sea, is home to UNESCO World Heritage Sites that recognise the city’s rich history and cultural resonance.
Jeddah since the 7th century has been a major port for Indian Ocean trade, and a key stop on the ancient Silk Road. Jeddah Historic District is home to diverse markets and more than 600 historic buildings with distinctive architecture reflecting its long history.

The district is a popular tourist destination as a result, particularly for cruise passengers cruising from the city in the Red Sea during the winter cruise season.
“Jeddah’s Historic District is one of our most popular Shorex destinations, and we continue to witness just how much international passengers enjoy exploring its unique historic sites through the tours and experiences we offer,” said Lars Clasen, CEO of Cruise Saudi.
“This MoU represents our shared vision and marks an exciting new chapter, paving the way for collaborative efforts to draw even more visitors to this enchanting destination while protecting its heritage and authenticity,” he added.
Under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture, the Jeddah Historic District program leads efforts in the regeneration of the historical center of Jeddah (Al Balad). Its aim is to establish it as a hub of culture and the arts, and an international heritage destination.

Cruise Saudi and Jeddah Historic District Program (JHD) have signed an MoU to manage the increasing number of international visitors to the district, particularly the large influx of cruise tourists following the opening of the Kingdom’s first cruise seasons.
The agreement focuses on preserving the area’s cultural identity and historical landmarks while also supporting local economic growth through local entrepreneurship and investment in sustainable economic activities that benefit the entire community.
“The tourism sector is experiencing growth and prosperity, which contributes to enhancing the Kingdom’s presence on the global tourism map in line with Saudi Vision 2030,” said Abdulaziz bin Ibrahim Al-Issa, Director General of Jeddah Historic District Program. “Our strategic partnership with Cruise Saudi is not only to drive economic growth but also to actively engage in the regeneration of the district.”
The partnership will seek to protect both the tangible and intangible heritage that earned the district its UNESCO status, recognizing its profound cultural impact.
