New Sun Princess to feature three-deck dining room and most advanced theatre ever

Princess Cruises new ship Sun Princess will feature the cruise line’s first triple-deck main dining room and the most advanced theatre in the fleet when she is introduced in 2025.

These are some of the new details about the vessel released by the cruise line in a press release, which describes the ship as its most contemporary and state-of-the-art yet.

Sun Princess will also be the first in the fleet to be powered by LNG, a cleaner fuel alternative to marine diesel or heavy fuel oil, which are the current main fuels used by cruise ships.

“With the construction of any new ship, we have the incredible opportunity to design standout spaces with our guests’ preferences in mind,” said John Padgett, President, Princess Cruises. “With the new platform and size of Sun Princess, we’re uniquely able to refresh venues we know our guests love and expand upon, redesign and elevate them to the next level.”

Sun Princess is currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and will be the largest Princess ship ever constructed when she is delivered in 2024.

The ship will carry 4,000 guests and feature a newly designed Piazza, a characteristic public space aboard Princess ships, as well as The Dome, a cutting-edge entertainment space inspired by the terraces of Santorini.

She is the first in a new class of ships for Princess Cruises and isn’t based on the Excel-class platform of Carnival Corporation, the parent company of Princess Cruises. Unlike AIDA, Costa, P&O and Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises’ new LNG-powered mega-ship will be a design unique to Princess.

At 175,000-gross tons she’ll be slightly smaller than the 180,000-ton Excel-class ships, which include Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, AIDAcosma, AIDAnova, Costa Toscana, Costa Smerelda, and P&O’s Iona and Arvia.

Horizons Dining Room

Aboard Sun Princess the Horizons main dining room will be a three-story space with open and flexible seating offering ocean views across the ship’s wake. A massive decorative sculpture that stretches from deck 6 to deck 8will be a centrepiece of the room.

The three decks will each have their own personalities, offer different dining experiences and range in levels of formality, according to a press release.

Up in the bow of the ship, the Princess Arena will be the most technologically advanced Princess Theater design at sea, with a stunning visual above the central stage which can become part of the show, and an in-the-round configuration and moveable seats giving all guests uninterrupted sightlines.

Sun Princess will also include a range of Princess Cruises signature favourites, such as Alfredo’s Pizzeria, Princess Live! and the Shops of Princess, but with a few upgrades and tweaks for the new vessel.

Alfredo’s Pizzeria will once again have an open kitchen design, allowing guests to watch as the chefs create pizza by hand and serve them straight out of them oven. New to the kitchen is a professional, open-mouth oven that reaches 968 degrees, allowing chefs to create authentic contemporary Neapolitan pizza.

Princess Live! will combine the design elements of Princess Live! and the Explorer’s Lounge, enabling participatory, signature cruise activities like game shows, trivia, and the daily Wake Show. Luxurious textures and materials will be featured on a mixture of comfortable loose and fixed lounge seating with full beverage service, an inviting semi-open façade, and large LED screen on stage.

The lounge will also be located close to the ship’s various restaurants and cocktail lounges, so that guests can easily move from one to the other.

The Shops of Princess will feature five retail locations, plus an art gallery, with the modern, elegant boutiques connecting fluidly and featuring interactive experiences. Guests can shop easily from space to space featuring Princess logo merchandise, a lifestyle boutique, a new bazaar featuring destination-specific selections, plus jewelry, watches, cosmetics fragrances and a modern art gallery.
