Video: Tallest slide at sea is installed aboard one of the world’s largest cruise ships

Royal Caribbean has released a video showing the famous 10-story Ultimate Abyss twin slides being installed aboard Oasis of the Seas during her record-breaking US $165-million refit and refurbishment.

The Ultimate Abyss was first introduced aboard the third Oasis-class cruise ship Harmony of the Seas in 2015, and has since featured aboard sister ship Symphony of the Seas launched in 2018 and will be included in the design of the fifth Oasis-class ship Wonder of the Seas in 2021.

Towering more than 150 feet above sea level, overlooking the AquaTheater at the aft of the ship, the pair of side-by-side slides send riders into a 100 foot drop that twists and turns in a serpentine-like movement from the Pool and Sports Zone on Deck 16 to the Boardwalk on Deck 6 below.

The slide is crowned by the now-iconic Anglerfish statue, which pays homage to the demonic-looking predator that lures other fish toward its jaws with a protruding esca bone that in some species emits light as a distraction.

The Ultimate Abyss is made up of two separate cylinders, a reflection of one-another, each with a diameter of approximately 2.6 feet and constructed of stainless steel.

Spontaneous audio effects within each tunnel create a multi-sensory thrill for daring guests willing to test their mettle while traversing 216 feet through the one-of-a-kind slide duo.

The video below gives you an idea of the experience to be had aboard the newest Oasis-class ship Symphony of the Seas, and now it will be offered aboard the class leader as well.

The Ultimate Abyss is just one of the exciting changes being made to Oasis of the Seas to bring her up-to-date with the newer Symphony of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas. The second Oasis-class ship Allure of the Seas, is also set to undergo a similar refit.

From the tallest slide at sea, The Ultimate Abyss, and the Ultimate Panoramic suites with 200-degree, floor-to-ceiling views, to Royal Caribbean’s first barbecue restaurant – Portside BBQ –Oasis of the Seas is marking its 10-year anniversary in a big way.

It’s a fitting refit and refurbishment for the ship that literally changed the game when she was launched in 2009.

Her size made it possible to offer a myriad of cruise experience aboard the same vessel for the first time, and major cruise lines such as Carnival with Mardi Gras, and MSC Cruises with MSC Europa, have taken Oasis of the Seas and her sisters as their inspiration.
