Norwegian to introduce West End musical “SIX” aboard Bliss, Getaway and Breakaway

Norwegian Cruise Line continues to up its musicals-at-sea game with the announcement that it will be introducing the West End musical “SIX” aboard Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Bliss in September.

The British pop musical production tells the story of King Henry VIII’s six wives and joins other well-known productions aboard Norwegian’s newer ships, including “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” (Norwegian Epic), “After Midnight” (Norwegian Escape), “Footloose” (Norwegian Joy) and “Kinky Boots” (Norwegian Encore).

“Guests will be mesmerized by the comical and powerful leading ladies who will have them laughing, singing and dancing their way out of the theatre,” Andy Stuart, Norwegian’s President and CEO promised in a press release.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Norwegian Cruise Line to showcase this award-winning musical for the first time at sea,” added Kenny Wax, one of the producers of SIX. “Originating from the minds of two senior Cambridge University students in the U.K., the show has surprised and delighted audiences around the globe.”

It isn’t as well known to American theatre audiences, but has received raze reviews in the UK and Europe. It will likely gain more name recognition when it opens on Broadway in 2020.

The musical first debuted in 2017 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival before arriving on London’s West End.

SIX will join a number of other popular productions aboard Getaway, Bliss and Breakaway.

These include “Rock of Ages” (Norwegian Breakaway), “Million Dollar Quartet” (Norwegian Getaway) and “Jersey Boys” (Norwegian Bliss).

The cruise industry is no stranger to West End and Broadway performances, with all three of the biggest cruise lines (Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean) having replaced Las Vegas revue-style shows in favour of full musical productions.

When Norwegian Epic launched in 2010, it featured onboard performances by the Blue Man Group, and MSC Cruises’ hosts specially created Cirque du Soleil shows on MSC Bellissima and MSC Meraviglia.

Royal Caribbean gives cruisers a chance to see “Cats” (Oasis of the Seas), “Grease” (Harmony of the Seas), “Hairspray” (Symphony of the Seas), “Mamma Mia!” (Allure of the Seas), “We Will Rock You” (Anthem of the Seas) and “Saturday Night Fever” (Liberty of the Seas).
