Swan Hellenic unveils 2026 West Africa and expanded 2027 Cape Town programme

Swan Hellenic has announced two extended itineraries along the west coast of Africa for 2026, alongside plans to expand its regional programme out of Cape Town in 2027.

The development comes as expedition operators continue to develop longer, port-intensive voyages in less conventional cruise markets.

The two Grand Voyages will operate in autumn 2026 aboard SH Diana, a 192-passenger vessel designed for expedition-style cruising. The itineraries focus on West Africa’s Atlantic coastline, incorporating a mix of established ports and less frequently visited destinations.

The first sailing, a 12-night itinerary titled Atlantic Crossroads, will depart on September 16th, 2026, operating between Senegal and Ghana and calling at nine ports across seven countries.

A second voyage, departing on September 29th, 2026, will run for 14 nights between Ghana and Angola, also visiting nine ports in seven countries.

The itineraries can be combined into a single 26-night programme linking Dakar and Luanda, covering 14 countries and 18 ports.

The deployment reflects a continued effort by expedition lines to expand itineraries along the West African coast, a region that has historically seen limited cruise traffic compared with more established expedition markets such as Antarctica or the Arctic.

Operators have increasingly positioned these voyages as a combination of cultural, historical, and nature-based experiences, often relying on smaller ships capable of accessing ports with more limited infrastructure.

In addition to the 2026 programme, Swan Hellenic has outlined a broader schedule for 2027, comprising nine sailings across two seasonal windows.

A spring series will include four northbound voyages between Cape Town and Lisbon, covering 14 countries over a 46-day period. Among these is a nine-night sailing departing Dakar on May 5th, 2027, which connects West Africa with Atlantic island destinations en route to Portugal.

A second series of voyages in autumn 2027 will operate in the opposite direction, with five southbound itineraries between Lisbon and Cape Town.

These voyages will span up to 51 days and include calls in 15 countries. Shorter itineraries are also planned within the programme, including a seven-night sailing from Lisbon to Casablanca departing on September 8th, 2027.

The expansion comes as cruise operators continue to test demand for longer itineraries that combine multiple regions, particularly in shoulder seasons when ships reposition between hemispheres.

West Africa, with its geographic position between Europe and southern Africa, is increasingly being incorporated into these deployment patterns, offering an alternative to more traditional repositioning routes.
