Explora II redeployment sees Mediterranean replace Middle East winter season

Explora Journeys, the luxury subsidiary of MSC Cruises, has confirmed that Explora II will operate in the Mediterranean between November 2026 and March 2027, replacing its previously planned deployment in the Middle East.

The revised programme reflects an early adjustment to the ship’s schedule, with the cruise line opting to confirm the change several months in advance of the winter season.

The decision comes amid ongoing considerations affecting cruise deployment in the wider region, including operational constraints linked to transit through the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

“This decision has been taken well in advance, following careful consideration and reflecting Explora Journeys’ commitment to providing guests and travel advisors with clarity and confidence as they plan their future journeys,” Explora Journeys said in a statement.

Under the updated deployment, Explora II will sail a series of itineraries across the Western Mediterranean, with voyages also expected to include ports in North Africa.

The programme is intended to focus on a mix of established and less-frequented destinations, offering a broader seasonal spread across southern Europe and neighbouring regions during the winter months.

The adjustment aligns with a broader pattern of cruise lines refining deployment strategies in response to evolving regional dynamics.

While the Middle East has seen continued growth as a winter cruise destination in recent years, current conditions affecting maritime access routes have prompted operators to review positioning schedules and prioritise flexibility in forward planning.

Explora Journeys indicated that guests booked on affected itineraries, along with travel advisor partners, will be contacted directly.

Support measures are being put in place to manage changes to reservations, with options to be provided where applicable. The company has not yet detailed the scale of itinerary revisions or the number of sailings impacted.

Further information on the Mediterranean winter programme, including specific itineraries and ports of call, is expected to be released at the end of the month.

The redeployment of Explora II underscores the continued importance of advance planning in the cruise sector, particularly for newbuild vessels entering service in a dynamic operating environment.
