Durban readies for bumper summer tourism and 2025/26 cruise season arrivals 

Durban, South Africa is preparing for an influx of visitors as the city launches its Sizzling Summer Campaign and welcomes the start of the 2025/26 cruise season, signalling one of the busiest holiday periods in recent years.

The KwaZulu-Natal port city is expecting an estimated 1.3 million visitors over the coming months, boosted by the arrival of major cruise ships such as MSC Opera, Ryndam, and Europa, which will bring thousands of international tourists to its shores.

As South Africa’s primary cruise port for the domestic market, Durban will be a homeport for MSC Opera during her upcoming summer cruise season from November 2025 to April 2026.

The summer campaign, launched under the theme Visit Durban: Endless Waves of Tranquillity, highlights the city’s coastal appeal, cultural diversity, and expanding role as a gateway for Indian Ocean cruising. 

City officials say the initiative is designed to reinforce Durban’s position as both a leisure and maritime destination, combining land-based attractions with a growing cruise tourism sector that supports local businesses and hospitality services.

Councillor Thembo Ntuli, Chairperson of the City’s Economic Development and Planning Committee, said tourism remained a vital economic driver. “We’re expecting 1.3 million visitors, which will inject an estimated R341 million in direct spend and contribute over R845 million to the city’s GDP,” he said. 

“This activity will create more than 15,000 jobs and generate R630 million in taxes. Beyond the numbers, it’s about sharing Durban’s essence — resilience, warmth and creativity,” he added.

The 2025/26 cruise season is expected to build on recent years of steady growth, with Durban serving as both a turnaround and transit port for itineraries linking South Africa, Mozambique and Mauritius. 

MSC Cruises continues to anchor its South African operations in the city, while luxury lines such as Holland America Line are also including Durban in regional schedules. The city’s King Shaka International Airport and beachfront hotels are reporting increased demand ahead of November’s cruise arrivals.

Key beachfront areas such as uMhlanga are finalising preparations for the festive season, with additional safety patrols, concerts, and family-friendly events planned. Naomi Crous, Chairperson of uMhlanga Tourism, said local businesses were ready for a strong season. 

“Security is a top priority — Metro Police are fully mobilised, and the promenade is sparkling clean to welcome visitors of all ages,” she said.

The city has also strengthened safety measures across beaches and tourist zones, deploying smart policing technology, lifeguards, and child-minding services along the waterfront.

As Durban embarks on another summer of tourism and cruise activity, officials are confident the combination of festive programming and expanding cruise arrivals will reinforce the city’s reputation as South Africa’s warmest port of call.
