Norwegian Cruise Line amends itinerary for Norwegian Dawn’s South African season

Norwegian Cruise Line has informed guests booked on upcoming sailings of the Norwegian Dawn that significant itinerary changes will impact itineraries between Port Louis, Mauritius, and Cape Town, South Africa. 

The 12-night cruises, originally scheduled to include stops in Madagascar and Reunion, have been adjusted, with alterations affecting every port of call on at least two sailings.

The ship’s November 26th, 2024 departure from Cape Town to Port Louis, will see timings for every port call adjusted, staying 30 minutes longer in Mossel Bay, arriving to Port Louis an hour later than scheduled, and the complete cancellation of the visit to Pointe des Galets on Reunion, which will now be a day at sea.

On this cruise, Norwegian Dawn will also not stay overnight in Richard’s Bay, with the port call now just a long day visit from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Furthermore, the shifts in times for other ports of call – such as visiting Nosy Be, Madagascar on Wednesday, December 4th from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. instead of on Tuesday, December 3rd from 1-9 p.m. – will impact independent shore tours.

Similar changes have been made for Norwegian Dawn‘s January 17th, 2025 departure, which also has changes to the days and timings of all port calls. 

On that cruise, the visits to Maputo, Mozambique and Tolanaro, Madagascar have been completely cancelled, with alternative visits added for Nosy Be and Antsiranana.

Norwegian Cruise Line cited fuel efficiency as a key factor for the changes, a practice the company has used in previous adjustments to optimise sailings. Similar modifications have been made on the Norwegian Spirit’s November 2024 Japan cruise and Norwegian Prima’s transatlantic journey in April 2025.

The cruise line has offered minimal compensation to affected travelers, such as a $50 onboard credit for the January 17th, 2025 departure. However, under the company’s Guest Ticket Contract, Norwegian Cruise Line retains the right to alter itineraries at any time, including changing port visits or timings, without offering additional compensation.

Despite the changes, the sailings still provide travelers with the opportunity to explore a unique and sought-after African itinerary, though guests are advised to stay updated on any further notifications regarding their specific departure.

Norwegian Dawn will cruise a range of alternating 12-night cruises from Cape Town to Mauritius and Mauritius to Cape Town between November 2024 and May 2025. 

These cruises have proven popular with both the home market in South Africa and the cruise line’s US and Europe-based fly-cruise market, with the ship already confirmed for another season in 2025/26.
