Carnival reveals dining and entertainment options in La Piazza zone aboard Mardi Gras

Carnival Cruise Line has revealed additional details about the dining experiences to be had in its La Piazza zone aboard the new Mardi Gras, its largest cruise ship to date and the first in the world with an onboard rollercoaster.

Mardi Gras’ La Piazza zone will be a tribute to Italy, with dining and interior design elements inspired by Italy’s unique culture and cuisine, according to Carnival Cruise Line, which revealed new details about the zone to mark National Pizza Day.

Mardi Gras was delivered in late 2020.

La Piazza will feature expanded versions of longtime Carnival favorites such as Cucina del Capitano, the largest in the fleet, and Pizzeria del Capitano, which will offer indoor and outdoor seating on the Lanai.

Cucina del Capitano will feature a menu of Italian favorites and a diverse wine list with selections that include Zonin Soave and Batasiolo Barolo, all enhanced by a décor featuring the cruise line’s history.

Cucina del Capitano aboard Mardi Gras will be the largest in the fleet (pictured is the one aboard Carnival Sunrise).

These will include photos, artwork and memorabilia from Carnival’s officers, highlighted by colorful oil paintings of Mardi Gras and its namesake vessel that established Carnival Cruise Line in 1972.

Pizzeria del Capitano will offer five varieties of freshly baked artisanal pizzas by the pie or by the slice available 24 hours a day.

La Piazza will feature novelty design features, such as a vintage Fiat and Vespa.

La Piazza will also feature a variety of new food and beverage outlets, such as Bar della Rosa inspired by Italy’s cafes with classic classic Italian cocktails such as the Aperol Spritz, Italian wines sourced from regions across the country, Italian beers, as well as espresso and cappuccinos, all made with Lavazza coffee.

There’s also Piazza Panini offering hand-pressed sandwiches like Salumeria stuffed with capicola, prosciutto, salami, provolone and roasted peppers, as well as the Peppe featuring mortadella, provolone, mozzarella, tomatoes and spicy olives.

A number of deli favorites and desserts are offered as well.

The La Piazza zone has been designed to resemble a stroll through an Italian courtyard with red brick, streetlights and ornate iron and tile work, as well as murals of famous piazzas in Rome, Venice and other Italian cities.

It also features unusual touches like a vintage 1972 Vespa scooter and Fiat car  – both from the year Carnival Cruise Line was established and sailed its first-ever cruise aboard the original Mardi Gras.
